About the position

The Veterinarian position at SPCA of Wake County involves providing high-quality medical care to a diverse population of animals, including shelter pets. The role emphasizes collaboration with a dedicated medical team to enhance animal welfare through innovative strategies and efficient operations. The veterinarian will perform spay and neuter surgeries, manage medical cases, and contribute to community outreach efforts, all while working in a supportive and fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide outstanding medical care to a diverse population of animals in the SPCA's adoption program.
  • Collaborate with the existing medical team to develop innovative strategies for optimal animal health and well-being.
  • Encourage continuous improvement and outside-of-the-box solutions throughout the shelter to increase quality of care.
  • Coordinate with all departments (intake, animal care, adoptions) to ensure streamlined operations and judicious resource allocation.
  • Communicate regularly with the development team to share heartwarming stories and medical successes for community outreach.
  • Participate in interdepartmental conversations to maintain open communication on organizational progress and needs.
  • Provide guidance and support to the dedicated medical staff, empowering them to excel in their roles.
  • Train staff on the use and importance of Fear Free handling methods.
  • Perform surgical sterilizations and examine animals postoperatively to ensure appropriate recovery.
  • Vaccinate and snap test animals, following all organizational and medical protocols.

Requirements

  • Must hold a current North Carolina Veterinary License or be qualified to obtain such license within 60 days of hire.
  • Must be qualified & eligible to obtain a DEA license.
  • Must use fear-free handling methods and become Fear Free Certified within 60 days of hire.
  • Must be knowledgeable about shelter medicine and spay & neuter best practices.
  • Effective decision-making and diagnostic skills are required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and insurable driving record.
