About the position

Language Services is currently searching for an On-site Spanish Medical Interpreter for our Union Hospital located on the Cecil Campus in Elkton, MD. The work schedule is Day shift. A weekend rotation is required in addition to a rotation to the Newark campus. The ideal candidates will have expert proficiency in speaking and communicating fluently. You will be required to complete and pass competency testing in the language. Medical interpreter training by a qualified training program is required, experience in the medical field is greatly preferred. The primary function is to serve as a medical interpreter for patients and staff, rendering information accurately and completely between English and Spanish in compliance with all ChristianaCare Language Services and ChristianaCare hospital policies and procedures, particularly relating to patient confidentiality and informed consent, following the NCIHC Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. Key components of the position are to provide accurate and qualified interpretation between limited English proficient (LEP) patients and English-speaking healthcare providers to facilitate successful health outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a resource to both patients and providers to contribute to successful outcomes.
  • Explain ChristianaCare linguistic and cultural resource to both patients and providers.
  • Provide face to face, telephonic or video interpretation for encounters, including and not limited to medical appointments, assessments, family meetings, psychiatric and social work consultations, teaching, informed consents, explanation of tests and procedures, palliative care, and end of life.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Fluency in a foreign language and English, with proof of proficiency.
  • Medical interpreter training (minimum 40-hour program) or a degree in interpreting.
  • One to two years of experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter, or equivalent education and experience.
  • National Certification may substitute for experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • An associate degree or college work in any area related to science or human services highly desired.
  • Experience in the medical field is greatly preferred.
