About the position

Central Garden & Pet Company (NASDAQ: CENT) is a leading innovator, marketer, and producer of quality branded products for the pet, lawn, and garden supplies markets. Our Dog and Cat business unit is searching for a highly motivated and detail-oriented Sourcing - Procurement Specialist I who will be responsible for sourcing high-quality raw materials for our Nylabone, Four Paws, and IMS brands. This position is crucial in ensuring the timely and cost-effective procurement of raw materials, which directly impacts our product quality and market competitiveness. Reporting to the Director of Procurement, the Sourcing - Procurement Specialist I will work closely with suppliers, manufacturers, and internal teams to achieve sourcing goals and maintain strong supplier relationships. The ideal candidate will dive into vendor identification, capability assessment and selection, new item sourcing (finished goods, raw materials, and supplies), new item specifications, cost management, and cost savings initiatives. This role requires conducting thorough market research to identify and evaluate potential suppliers of raw materials for pet food production and finished products. The candidate will negotiate contracts, pricing, and terms with suppliers to ensure competitive rates and favorable terms, while also developing and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors. In addition to sourcing responsibilities, the Sourcing - Procurement Specialist I will conduct market research to stay informed about industry trends, new products, and potential suppliers, ensuring that the company remains competitive and innovative. The role also involves maintaining knowledge of commodities, sources of supply, diversity opportunities, and market conditions that may impact future procurement. Collaboration with all corporate departments, including Accounting, QA, Production, Planning, and Customer Service, is essential to realize sourcing goals and ensure qualified suppliers are available to support the needs of the business. The candidate will also be responsible for obtaining information, documents, and data to execute high-quality project management and assist with preparing various reports, presentations, and documentation. Other job-related functions may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain information, documents, and data to execute high-quality project management.
  • Assist with preparing various reports, presentations, and documentation.
  • Perform other job-related functions as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in sourcing raw materials in a manufacturing environment.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with exceptional written and verbal communication.
  • Comprehensive cost modeling and 'should-cost' estimate analysis.
  • Experience establishing and negotiating vendor purchasing contracts & agreements.
  • Experience in working with cross-functional teams and creating a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to maintain the integrity of highly confidential customer and product information.
  • Computer proficiency on all MS Office applications.

  • Bilingual Spanish speaking preferred.
