About the position

The Soil/Geotechnical Engineer position at SOL Engineering Services, LLC involves providing technical support for FEMA disaster-related operations across the United States. The role focuses on geotechnical analysis and site assessments to assist in disaster response and recovery projects, ensuring compliance with FEMA standards. The ideal candidate will have experience in FEMA Public Assistance projects and will work closely with FEMA representatives and local agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct geotechnical assessments and soil evaluations for FEMA PA projects, including soil compaction, slope stability, and foundational stability analysis.
  • Perform site investigations, soil sampling, and field testing to identify subsurface conditions and assess geotechnical risks.
  • Develop and submit technical reports and engineering documentation in line with FEMA PA requirements.
  • Provide recommendations for soil stabilization, erosion control, and geotechnical hazard mitigation in recovery projects.
  • Work with FEMA representatives and stakeholders to develop and implement effective mitigation and recovery plans.
  • Conduct field inspections to assess soil and structural damage due to natural disasters, providing insights for recovery efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with FEMA and regulatory agency requirements, codes, and standards throughout the project lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Soil Mechanics, or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license with 5+ years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, or Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of experience in the related field.
  • Experience with FEMA Public Assistance projects, including project documentation, assessment, and grants management.
  • Knowledge of soil mechanics, geotechnical software (such as GeoStudio, PLAXIS), and GIS applications.
  • Strong project management skills, with an ability to manage tasks independently and within project timelines.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with clients, team members, and regulatory bodies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in floodplain management or as a Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM).
  • Experience with environmental impact assessments and knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations.
  • Familiarity with FEMA PA grant management software and processes.
