About the position
The Privacy Engineering team is responsible for building systems to ensure personal data is processed or accessed according to customer expectations. As Etsy's engineering systems become increasingly sophisticated, our role in supporting privacy alongside fast-moving business goals makes the work dynamic, challenging and rewarding. The Privacy Engineering team is seeking a Privacy Software Engineer II to contribute to the team through design, implementation and collaboration with key partners as we work to make privacy the default in our complex engineering landscape. This position will require delivering multi-faceted projects, demonstrating strong communication skills to work with engineers of different types as well as cross-functional stakeholders from different backgrounds and technical levels. The right candidate for this job will have experience with intricate systems and codebases, coding with best practices, and communication with collaborators across the business. This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager of Privacy Engineering. Responsibilities
- Contribute at all levels; from front-end (HTML, CSS, JS, and relevant frameworks), to API design and back-end (PHP, MySQL, BigQuery), and standalone supporting services running in containers
- Participate in code and design reviews and maintain high standards of code quality, and occasionally participate in technical privacy reviews
- Work with supporting functions, such as analytics, legal, data engineering, security and others to make sure we are building systems that deliver on our goals
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience working on large scale projects
- Strong communication skills to work with engineers of different types and cross-functional stakeholders
- Experience with intricate systems and codebases, coding with best practices
Nice-to-haves
- Familiarity with the current state of technical privacy regulations (e.g. CPRA) and platform limitations (e.g. 3rd party cookies, App-Tracking Transparency)
- Ability to document technical design and lead others
- Organizational skills to break down large problems into smaller ones
- A 'leave it better than you found it' mentality
- Ability to write understandable, testable code with an eye towards maintainability and scalability
