About the position

Sorenson Communications is seeking part-time Deaf and hearing community interpreters to provide high-quality interpretation services for Deaf consumers across various locations. The role requires a minimum of 10 hours of interpreting services per month, with scheduling flexibility to meet community demands. Successful candidates will demonstrate proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English, ensuring effective communication between Deaf and hearing individuals. The position is open to both new applicants and current Sorenson non-exempt employees in good standing, with all candidates required to pass a skills assessment to verify their interpreting capabilities. As an interpreter, you will be responsible for interpreting between ASL and spoken English for hearing interpreters, and between ASL, Tactile American Sign Language, and written English for Deaf interpreters. Adherence to Sorenson policies and the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct is essential, as is providing excellent customer service while maintaining a respectful and professional demeanor with clients and colleagues. The role also involves working collaboratively in a team environment, meeting performance expectations with minimal supervision, and enhancing interpreting skills through ongoing education and training. Candidates must maintain compliance with any national, state, or local licensure and certification requirements, and be prepared to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The position requires flexibility in scheduling to accommodate various interpreting needs in community settings, and interpreters are expected to represent the Sorenson Communications brand positively during interactions with customers. Additionally, the role may involve mentoring intern students and completing other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively interpret between ASL and spoken English for hearing interpreters.
  • Interpret between ASL, Tactile American Sign Language, and written English for Deaf interpreters.
  • Adhere to Sorenson policies and procedures, and the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Provide excellent customer service while maintaining a respectful and professional attitude with customers and colleagues.
  • Work effectively in a team environment; receive support from and provide support to colleagues.
  • Meet performance and customer service expectations with minimal supervision.
  • Enhance interpreting skills through continuing education and training.
  • Maintain compliance with any national, state, or local licensure and/or certification requirements.
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet various interpreting needs in the community setting.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment in a variety of settings and locations.
  • Comply with Sorenson Communications attendance requirements.
  • Effectively represent the Sorenson Communications brand when interacting with customers in the field.
  • Work with intern students or provide mentoring when appropriate and as assigned.
  • Be prompt and prepared for each interpreting engagement.
  • Be flexible with assignment changes.
  • Use technology for accurate reporting for billing, scheduling, and service evaluation.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to pass the required skills assessment.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree is preferred but not required.
  • Interpreter certification is required.
  • 3 years' experience working as an interpreter is preferred.
  • Ability to travel independently in the metropolitan area.
  • Access to a vehicle, valid driver's license, and personal vehicular insurance at the minimum state required level.
