About the position

The Sign Language Interpreter position at Windham School District involves providing interpretation services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a mainstream classroom setting. The role requires adapting communication methods to meet the needs of students and participating as a cooperative member of the educational team. This position is essential for facilitating effective communication in educational environments, particularly within the Texas prison system.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret instructor's lectures, comments, and questions for deaf/hard-of-hearing students in a mainstream classroom setting.
  • Interpret students' questions and statements.
  • Interpret for school functions as assigned.
  • Adapt signing level and system to the communication needs of the students.
  • Follow the code of ethics for certified interpreters.
  • Participate cooperatively as a member of the educational team.
  • Follow schedule as determined by the principal of assignment.
  • Willing to improve signing skills through in-service, workshops and/or additional classes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma from an accredited high school or hold GED.
  • Certification from the Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) or the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) required.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License to drive to different prisons.
  • Must be 21 years old.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working in educational settings with deaf/hard-of-hearing students.
  • Familiarity with the Texas prison system.
