About the position

The Ship's QMED position at Oregon State University involves assisting the Chief Engineer and First Assistant Engineer(s) in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of machinery, mechanical, and electrical systems on OSU-operated research vessels. This role is part of the Ship Operations unit within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, which is recognized for its leadership in Earth system studies and operates multiple research vessels.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the engine room as directed by the chief engineer.
  • Assists in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the ship's machinery and systems under the direction of senior engineering personnel.
  • Updates machinery history log and other records upon overhaul or repair of ship's machinery and equipment.
  • Assists in the installation and at-sea repair of mechanical and electrical scientific equipment under the direction of senior engineering personnel.
  • Actively participates in shipboard drills and emergency training, maintaining firefighting and safety equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED) or better license issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • STCW endorsements as appropriate for the position.
  • Ability to obtain a passport and meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.
  • Mechanical aptitude and basic knowledge of engines, pumps, compressors, hydraulics, and other mechanical and electrical systems commonly found on ships.
  • Experience using basic hand tools.
  • Ability to obtain Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
