About the position

The position is for a senior role within a manufacturing plant at Sonoco, responsible for overseeing safety, quality, productivity, material handling, cost performance, and employee relations. The successful candidate will manage hourly employees, implement best manufacturing practices, and ensure compliance with regulations while driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety of all employees; lead safety teams and programs to prevent injuries.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations (EPA, OSHA, etc.).
  • Supervise all production activities, schedule shift employees, crew machines to cover vacations, absences, and overtime.
  • Meet or exceed productivity cost, scrap reduction, or other performance metric expectations.
  • Implement and maintain best manufacturing practices.
  • Hire, train, direct and mentor employees with diverse language, cultural and educational background.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives within scope of Sonoco Production Systems (SPS): such as 5S with safety, 6 Sigma, Kaizen events, and deploying lean manufacturing principles.
  • Coordinate production scheduling on shift to meet customer demands, manage overtime, minimize inventory, and to reduce costs.
  • Support quality initiatives to ensure product meets or exceeds customer expectations.
  • Ensure employees complete required quality checks and audits.
  • Build and maintain productive employee relationships, driving employee satisfaction.
  • Provide direction, training, and development as needed.
  • Provide coaching, counseling, or discipline as needed.
  • Recommend disciplinary action to direct report.
  • Identify, propose, and implement capital projects to improve operational performance.
  • Prepare or approve required shift documentation: production reports, time cards, etc.
  • Monitor and sign off on the monthly inventory cycle counts for raw materials and finished goods.
  • Ensure accuracy and plans are established to address any issues or abnormal swings in inventory levels.
  • Control raw materials and maintain inventory at an economical level.
  • Ensure the accurate accounting, interpretation and reporting of results.
  • Responsible for all physical assets of the plant, such as building, machinery, equipment and grounds.
  • Responsible for continuously improving production/plant operations and ensures there is an ongoing program to control and reduce cost, improve quality and operating efficiency.
  • Foster culture that supports Sonoco Business & Conduct plan.
  • Communicate plant mission, results and provides customer feedback to all team members.
  • Work as requested with the commercial team or engineering on new product costing and business growth opportunities by efficiently providing accurate manufacturing assumption information.
  • Complete physical inventory, multiple times each week.
  • Foster and promote positive relationships with the two primary customers (Clearwater & Sofidel).
  • Build and maintain local contacts to ensure reputable community relations.
  • Communicate with all plant personnel so that all goals, expectations, and performance as compared to plan are well understood.
  • Encourage and support hourly participation and involvement in all functional areas so as to create effective teamwork, ownership, development, and employee satisfaction.
  • Support diversity in all activities including hiring, promotions, and training opportunities.
  • Maintain high level of team member performance and morale through ongoing monitoring, coaching, guidance and continuous feedback.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Science or Engineering or equivalent work history.
  • 2-5 years pertinent experience.
