About The Position

Options Community Services is a non-profit organization dedicated to delivering social services across the Southern Fraser region (Surrey, Delta, White Rock and Langley) from early childhood to seniors. Our comprehensive range of programs and services relies on collaborative relationships with individuals, businesses, community groups and government bodies to create focused, effective and responsive resources for the community. Join us as a Shelter Worker, where you’ll be on the front lines of change, offering vital emergency care and empowering individuals to reclaim their independence. Here, you'll engage with residents with empathy and drive, collaborating to achieve meaningful goals and transforming lives. Reporting to the Program Manager, our selected candidate will ensure that our residents have a safe and welcoming environment by securing the premises, conducting minor repairs, and responding to unsafe actions and conflicts among residents. Your role will include handling 24-hour referrals, extending stays as needed, and managing intake and orientation. You'll oversee the care and safety of both the residents and the shelter, set clear boundaries, and foster a positive atmosphere. Additionally, you'll supervise basic life skills, assist with hygiene, address resident barriers with collaborative plans, and provide resources and support while modeling appropriate behavior and encouraging resident participation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology or a related field
  • At least one year of recent, relevant experience within the last five years, including work in substance abuse and mental illness
  • Training in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and mediation skills
  • Cultural sensitivity training
  • Current Level I First Aid certificate
  • Superior time management
  • Proven crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and mediation skills
  • Strong teamwork and communication abilities
  • Proficiency in developing program materials
  • Commitment to problem-solving
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Union membership required
  • Undergo a Police Information Check (PIC)
  • Undergo a Vulnerable Sector Check by the Ministry of Justice

  • Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Access to personal vehicle
  • Crisis line experience
