About the position

The Sheepherder position involves managing and caring for a flock of sheep in a grazing environment. The role requires the individual to ensure the safety and well-being of the sheep, prevent them from wandering off, and assist in various sheep management tasks. This position is primarily outdoor work, requiring physical stamina and the ability to work independently in remote locations.

Responsibilities

  • Attend to sheep flock grazing on range or pasture.
  • Move sheep to and about the assigned grazing area.
  • Prevent animals from wandering and becoming lost using trained dogs.
  • Bed down sheep near the campsite or in a pen each night.
  • Guard the flock against predatory animals and prevent them from eating poisonous plants.
  • Assist in lambing, docking, castrating, dehorning, shearing, vaccination, drenching, and medicating animals.
  • Attend to sheep and lambs in barns during the lambing season.
  • Brand, tag, clip, or otherwise mark sheep for identification purposes.
  • Sort and cut culls as necessary.
  • Feed animals supplementary rations.

Requirements

  • Ability to manage and care for a flock of 800-1000 sheep.
  • Experience with sheep handling and care tasks such as lambing and shearing.
  • Ability to work independently in remote locations.
  • Physical stamina to perform outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with trained dogs for herding sheep.
  • Knowledge of sheep health and nutrition.
