About the position

The position is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation of individuals who have experienced sexual violence. The role includes providing timely medical forensic examinations for sexual assault patients, collaborating with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care, and utilizing knowledge of the patient's age and cultural diversity in care provision. The nurse contributes to quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers nursing care according to the standards of care defined within the American Nurses' Association (ANA) Standards of Clinical Practice and Code of Nurses and the Indiana Nurse Practice Act.
  • Performs a comprehensive medical forensic examination for patients who have been sexually assaulted, including medical history and collection of forensic evidence.
  • Conducts head-to-toe assessments looking for trauma and screens for non-fatal strangulation and human trafficking.
  • Provides detailed ano-genital examinations and evaluates for the collection of forensic evidence.
  • Treats patients per medical protocol and refers them for follow-up medical care and counseling.
  • Maintains knowledge of the sexual assault medical forensic kit and chain of custody of evidence.
  • Documents injuries of all sexual assault patients and non-fatal strangulation patients.
  • Provides non-judgmental evidence collection to alleged perpetrators of sexual assault.
  • Participates in ongoing educational activities related to clinical knowledge and professional issues.
  • Serves as a preceptor for new Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) candidates.
  • Participates in ongoing legal processes and court appearances as required.
  • Formulates and implements discharge plans in coordination with multidisciplinary agencies.
