About the position

This is a skilled position and lead in the Parks and Recreation Forestry Division. This position oversees and participates in arboriculture and maintenance work. An employee in this class is responsible for overseeing and participating, when necessary, in the work of a medium-sized to large crew performing complex arboriculture work and general tree maintenance or other related municipal services. The employee is required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in completing assignments, which are of more than average difficulty and are performed in accordance with established procedures. At times, employees might be required to work under hazardous conditions. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation and results obtained.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees, schedules, assigns, and participates in the work of crews engaged in arboriculture and municipal tree maintenance.
  • Verifies work orders and lines up necessary equipment.
  • Inspects work in progress, issues instructions, and offers solutions to problems.
  • Operates light to heavy automotive equipment such as water truck, trash crane, dump truck, stump grinder, chipper, and aerial lifts as required.
  • Ensures Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) to provide a safe route for traffic and work zone for the City crew.
  • Assigns, directs, and reviews work of Parks and Recreation Forestry crews.
  • Evaluates tree/infrastructure conflict including sewers, streets, sidewalks, and curbs.
  • Inspects materials and equipment delivered to job site for compliance with specifications.
  • Prepares, interprets, and reads diagrams, work orders, landscape plans, maps.
  • Evaluates trees in the right-of-way (ROW) and City parks for structure, health, risk, insects, and diseases.
  • Identifies tree species and concerns, collects tree inventory data, and identifies invasive species.
  • Maintains records via computer, tablet, or cell phone; issues work orders for projects.
  • Requisitions, issues, and accounts for supplies and equipment.
  • Oversees crews and participates in training new employees.
  • Recommends changes and adjustments to operating procedures to improve productivity.
  • Verifies legal descriptions of property and checks assigned vehicles for readiness.
  • Meets with residents/other Departments with concerns about right-of-way (ROW) trees and park trees.
  • Ensures compliance with ANSI Z133 and ANSI A300 standards for all Forestry Division projects.
  • Operates radios, cell phones, tablets, and computers for communication.
  • Loads and unloads heavy items, including supplies, equipment, and materials manually.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in arboriculture and tree maintenance work, including one (1) year lead in arboriculture experience.
  • A valid Florida Commercial driver's license (CDL), Class 'B'; with Air Brakes.

  • ISA Certified Tree Worker Climber Specialist certification.
  • ISA Certified Tree Worker Aerial Lift Specialist certification.
  • TCIA Certifications.
