About the position

The Senior Staff Technician position at the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory in Safford, AZ, involves performing maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting of complex observatory systems. The role requires working at high altitudes and includes responsibilities such as managing telescope operations, ensuring safety compliance, and participating in project planning. The technician will also serve as Acting Manager when needed, overseeing staff and operations to maintain the observatory's readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Perform independent maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of observatory and telescope systems including hydraulic, pneumatic, overhead cranes, cryogenic, optical components, fiber and wire networks, HVAC, and glycol cooling.
  • Work with administration and purchasing to order, receive, and maintain telescope spare parts inventory.
  • Update documentation and records.
  • Fill in as Acting Shift Manager, coordinating activities of all staff, contractors, and visitors on site at LBT per approved schedule and priorities.
  • Identify schedule conflicts, emergent critical issues, and safety concerns, ensuring work sites are left in a safe condition.
  • Respond to emergency situations and consult with appropriate off-site management as needed.
  • Safely drive on mountain roads without guardrails up to 10,500 feet, including in winter conditions.
  • Check vehicle fluids, tire pressures, and inspect safety equipment.
  • Operate telescope systems to support maintenance and daily operations, occasionally filling in as an Observatory Support Associate.
  • Participate in ongoing development of the facility, telescope, and instruments through design reviews and project proposals.
  • Participate in project planning and scheduling, producing labor and material estimates.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associates Degree or Technical School Certificate.
  • Experience in the maintenance of large telescope observatories or other relevant precision electrical, optical, and mechanical systems.
