About the position

The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Research Institute is seeking a Senior Staff/Principal Scientist in AI and Data Science to lead a team focused on developing and deploying machine learning and artificial intelligence pipelines. This role is crucial for extracting disease-relevant insights from large datasets derived from primary and stem cell models. The successful candidate will collaborate with a diverse team of biologists, engineers, and researchers to design multimodal models that integrate various datasets, including genomics and transcriptomics, to advance the understanding of disease progression and therapeutic applications.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of data scientists specializing in AI/ML methodologies.
• Develop and deploy ML tools to unlock phenotypes in in-vitro cell models.
• Drive projects from inception to results, including designing cohorts to minimize batch effects.
• Use AI and Computer Vision to identify morphological phenotypic differences between cohorts.
• Design High Content Imaging (HCI) screens to highlight phenotypic differences between cohorts.
• Manage image data acquisition, storage, quality analysis, and transfer.
• Develop quality control and data visualization tools for high-content screens.
• Communicate technical results and methods clearly, interacting cross-functionally with various teams.
• Collaborate with computational biologists to integrate complementary datasets, including omics, to produce multimodal models of human disease.
• Write and procure grants and scientific papers.

Requirements

• PhD degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., statistics, computational biology, biomedical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics) or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience leading a team in the ML space, including interactions with engineers and scientists.
• 5+ years experience with Python.
• 5+ years experience with exploratory and statistical data analysis (e.g., linear models, multivariate analysis, predictive modeling, stochastic models).
• 5+ years experience extracting and cleaning data sets.
• 5+ years experience in AI and Computer Vision.
• Familiarity with software engineering practices and experience developing production software and using cloud computing (AWS preferred).
• Familiarity with microscopes, scientific imaging, and image analysis.
• Demonstrated willingness to teach others and learn new techniques.
• Excellent analytical and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

• Familiarity with scientific image analysis tools (ImageJ, FIJI).
• Familiarity with cell biology.
