Senior Software Engineer, Content Storage Gateway

BoxRedwood City, CA
$198,500 - $248,000Hybrid

About The Position

The Content Storage Gateway team manages numerous key components of the Box Content Cloud, including the primary services that enable customers to upload and download their content. Every day we solve problems of both scale and performance — our pipeline handles billions of requests and hundreds of terabytes of data daily for millions of users — not only as Box continues to grow, but to support products like Box AI and intelligent content workflows. As a critical piece of infrastructure that literally all content at Box passes through, we deal in best practices for reliability as a matter of course. We're also investing in how AI can accelerate our own engineering — from AI-assisted development workflows to intelligent observability — and we want engineers who are excited to push those boundaries alongside the product work. As we embark on the mission to deliver best-in-class performance and reliability for our customers, both internal and external, we're looking for a Senior Engineer to join us and play a pivotal role. You'll have the opportunity to work with a small team of talented, collaborative, and fun engineers solving some of the toughest challenges at Box. The work you do will have an immediate impact on the productivity of some of the most important enterprises of our time.

  • We are an AI-first company. This means you approach your work with a growth mindset and find ways to leverage AI to help make faster, smarter decisions that will 10X your impact at Box.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated ownership of significant technical initiatives.
  • Extensive experience deploying and operating microservices in a cloud environment.
  • Proven track record of building services and/or tooling using languages such as Java, Go, Scala, or Python.
  • Strong experience with distributed systems and metrics-based monitoring and alerting.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to learn new things.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Experience deploying and operating microservices on Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with content streaming and storage systems at scale.
  • Curiosity about (or experience with) integrating AI/LLM tooling into software development workflows — code generation, automated analysis, intelligent alerting, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and implementation efforts for new components of our platform.
  • Optimize upload and download pipelines that handle billions of requests and hundreds of terabytes of data daily across a global infrastructure.
  • Design and implement scalable services with a focus on reliability, observability, operability, and efficiency.
  • Use data — metrics, logs, query analysis — to identify bottlenecks, validate changes, and drive architectural decisions.
  • Be heavily involved in setting the platform vision and defining feature roadmaps.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and drive improvements to incident response and system resilience.
  • Mentor other engineers and contribute to team growth and development.
  • Strengthen engineering processes, principles, and culture within the team by championing a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
