About The Position

The Senior Recreation Leader is a part-time position that plays a vital role in bringing fun and engaging activities to life for a diverse community of all ages, including the senior community. This role requires a compassionate, positive, helpful, and welcoming attitude, working in a fast-paced, energetic atmosphere to deliver a consistent quality guest experience in recreation programs at community centers, after-school programming, parks, gymnasiums, special events, and more. This position is a vital member of the Recreation Department. Based on qualifications and interest, this role could assist in planning, developing, promoting, coordinating, and implementing a variety of recreation programs and activities. Key characteristics include a strong understanding of programs and services, the ability to follow District procedures, and exercising independent judgment in planning, developing, and implementing skills. The role involves collaborating with, guiding, and directing colleagues and volunteers to support and deliver successful programs. Strong communication, organizational, planning, and coordinating skills are essential. The position may also involve working in environments with live animals and contributing to their care and integration into educational programming.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or the equivalent (GED).
  • Basic knowledge of objectives, methods, and techniques of planning recreation activities.
  • Basic knowledge of arts and crafts.
  • Basic knowledge of indoor and outdoor games and sports for children of all ages.
  • Knowledge of how to provide basic homework help for kindergarten – 6th grade.
  • Knowledge of the operation of essential office equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and safe work practices.
  • Ability to assist with planning and organization of recreation programs for all ages.
  • Ability to appear for work on time, be presentable, and in a clean uniform.
  • Ability to assist in cleaning and maintaining recreational facilities.
  • Ability to be a source of accurate information.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, courtesy, and tact.
  • Must understand and follow directions given in writing and verbally.

  • Live Scan Fingerprint background check (If over 18) for criminal history verification.
  • Pre-employment functional capacity test to assess your ability to perform essential duties.
  • Pre-employment drug screen for the presence of controlled substances.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification for infants, Children, and Adults is required. If you don’t currently hold this certification, you must obtain it within 60 days of the hire date.
  • Use your hands: This includes handling, feeling, and manipulating objects, along with reaching with your hands and arms.
  • Maintain various positions: You’ll be expected to sit, stand, walk, grab, pull, and push objects, stoop, kneel, crouch down, or jump.
  • Lift and carry objects: Occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs. is required, with regular lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Vision/Hearing: This includes close-up vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. The individual must be able to identify signs of distress in a variety of environments, using a combination of visual and auditory cues or alternative methods for awareness.
  • Maintain balance: Climbing or balancing may be required for some tasks.
  • Sun Protection: Hat, Sunglasses, Sunscreen
  • Insect Repellent: Especially during mosquito season or in park areas.
  • Comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing: Long sleeves and pants may be necessary for sun protection or protection from scratches and scrapes during outdoor activities.
  • Sturdy closed-toes shoes: Provide good traction and protect feet from injuries.
  • Provided Gloves: For handling chemicals, sharp objects, or soiled equipment.
  • First-aid kit: Be prepared to administer basic first aid.

  • A combination of education, volunteer work, or training that demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this role.
  • Prior experience in recreational activities is a plus.
  • Bilingual is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor routine activities and assist with homework K-6th, sports, games, story time, and social activities.
  • Work on weekdays, after school, all day during school breaks, and on minimum day dismissals.
  • Plan, organize, and lead various sports programs, including leagues, clinics, and special events.
  • Develop and implement curriculum for sports instruction, ensuring progression and skill development.
  • Promote sports programs through outreach, marketing materials, and community events.
  • Officiate games adhering to league rules and regulations.
  • Ensure the safe set-up, use, and maintenance of sports equipment and facilities.
  • Assist with retail operations in the JMDC gift shop, including greeting visitors, providing information, organizing merchandise, and maintaining a clean and welcoming environment.
  • Supervise student groups, facilitate museum or outdoor learning activities, and help with hands-on demonstrations to support field trips and educational programs.
  • Provide general information to visitors about JMDC programs, events, exhibits and facility rules.
  • Be willing to work in close proximity to animal enclosures and participate in animal-related tasks – assisting with the care and maintenance of live animal exhibits, including feeding, habitat cleaning, and monitoring animal health and safety in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Maintains the security and proper functioning of assigned equipment and facilities.
  • Assist with program planning and organization.
  • Set up and clean up recreational areas and equipment.
  • Provides supervisor with necessary information concerning programs and supplies.
  • Assists volunteers in leading recreational activities or assignments.
  • Monitor activities and enforce safety rules to ensure orderly conduct in a safe and fun environment.
  • Maintain a safe environment for participants and staff.
  • Lead activities according to schedules and registration requirements.
  • Organize, officiate, and instruct children’s activities (sports, games, crafts).
  • Teach fundamentals of play and sportsmanship.
  • Monitor spectators and participants at sporting and special events.
  • Keeps attendance records and scores at sporting events and other activities.
  • Provide excellent customer service and public relations.
  • Answer questions and provide information about programs and events.
  • Answering phones, providing information, and receiving and receiving program fees and facility deposits.
  • Lead patrons in activities and follow schedules and registration requirements.
  • Receive, store, and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Performs general facility inspections and maintenance to recreation facilities as assigned.
  • Operate necessary equipment for activities.
  • Security of facilities and keys is a necessary element.
  • Attending and completing applicable online/in-person training sessions and orientations.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and take on new tasks.
  • Regular and timely attendance is mandatory.
  • Scheduled work hours may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.
