About the position

The Senior Manager, Design and Construction at CN is responsible for leading a team of Engineers and Project Managers to oversee internal and external construction projects from conception to completion. This role involves ensuring that projects align with CN's strategic vision and operational standards, coordinating with various departments, and ensuring compliance with safety requirements. The position requires a strong focus on project management, technical support, and operational issue resolution, all while fostering a safety-focused culture within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate internal and external capital expenditure (CapEx) projects
  • Lead projects with both internal and external stakeholders from conceptual design development through construction
  • Lead the design process including design reviews
  • Coordinate and handle capacity upgrade projects for internal functions
  • Handle budget approval costs and estimates for the project
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to complete construction projects
  • Track project budgets and project schedules
  • Track and manage design reviews and construction estimates
  • Review plans and specifications to ensure compliance with CN standards and safety rules
  • Provide internal assistance and guidance to support completion of construction projects
  • Aid on general design principles, engineering drawings and ensure that specifications are accurate
  • Provide technical support and coaching to Operations on track geometry and layout
  • Resolve internal issues and provide visibility to upper management
  • Respond to emergencies such as operational issues, derailments, and washouts
  • Handle the rebuilding and ensure the integrity of civil structures

Requirements

  • 7 to 15 years of experience in construction
  • Experience in leading and mentoring staff
  • Railway experience
  • Experience in track survey, track design, bridge design, and specification writing
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Valid Driver's Licence
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) Designation
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint)
