About The Position

ABS Government Engineering Services (GES) is searching for a Senior Engineer I to assist with ship structure, stability, and load line reviews. This person will perform engineering design review and analysis assignments, normally involving a major project or several smaller, less complex projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty, require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or science. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, the ideal candidate will develop a thorough understanding of policies, methods, and procedures. The individual will support Canadian and U.S. government agencies (Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), Department of National Defence (DND), and US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)) by performing various classification and certification services for surface vessels. An individual will need to be a Canadian Citizen or have permanent residence status in Canada. Must have or be able to attain a security clearance.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. may be preferred.
  • 5 to 10 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software; experience in software related to stability such as GHS, NAPA, or other equivalent software required.
  • Demonstrated experience in performing stability analyses in accordance with relevant Rules and Regulations.
  • Exposed to Finite Element Method (course work or supervised research).
  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines required.
  • The ability to identify, analyze and propose solutions to problems (i.e., the competence to demonstrate complex problem-solving, skills).
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional or chartered engineer license.
  • Familiarity with the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems (internal candidates only).

Responsibilities

  • Performs detailed engineering review of ship structural plans and stability analyses as assigned for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations, and contract commitments.
  • Prepared first principal calculations using computer-aided engineering tools to predict the structural integrity of the vessel.
  • Perform classical stress calculations, finite element stress analysis, and fatigue analysis.
  • Use of finite element modeling techniques, primarily FEMAP for finite element model development and NASTRAN finite element solution.
  • Perform Seakeeping Analysis and Structural Dynamic Analysis using ABS DLA/SFA software.
  • Prepare technical reports and work with other engineers to find resolutions to problems.
  • Maintain the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of action of all assigned projects to ABS standards.
  • Implements and maintains ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.
  • Prepared calculations by hand or using computer-aided engineering tools to predict the structural integrity of the vessel.
