About the position

The position involves providing guidance and direction to trainees and embryologists in a laboratory setting. The primary responsibilities include retrieving oocytes, preparing sperm for insemination, performing insemination of oocytes, cultivating embryos, and utilizing micromanipulation techniques for assisted fertilization and hatching. The role also includes preparing heparin media and culture dishes for each case, ensuring that all procedures are performed with precision and care.

Responsibilities

  • Properly prepares glassware used for IVF media preparation, including volumetric glass and pipettes, by detergent wash and heat sterilization.
  • Provides guidance and direction to trainees/embryologists to be ready to perform IVF procedures.
  • Screens new IVF patients for morphology and cryopreservation of sperm for emergency use on IVF retrieval day.
  • Ensures proper preparation of various media used for sperm washing and capacitation for in-vitro fertilization, embryo culture, embryo transfer, embryo freeze, and testicular sperm biopsy.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recover motile spermatozoa by 'swim-up' from semen specimens, washing and preparing them in media for in-vitro insemination.
  • Determines percentage of motile cells in swim-up and grades their progression and morphology relevant for fertility.
  • Correctly identifies and quantifies the presence of polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
  • Prepares human eggs for insemination and performs insemination in culture.
  • Retrieves human eggs from follicular aspirates and ensures proper inspection of human eggs, correctly identifying oocyte's maturity for subsequent insemination.
  • Inseminates human eggs with appropriate number of spermatozoa for culture.
  • Performs micromanipulation and prepares microtools for macromanipulation.
  • Performs intracytoplasmic sperm injection, injecting single sperm into an oocyte using high power microscope and micromanipulating equipment.
  • Performs assisted hatching and prepares microsurgical epididymal sperm aspirates.
  • Recovers motile sperm from specimens and performs intracytoplasmic sperm injection with sperm retrieved from epididymis.
  • Prepares testicular biopsy specimens and recovers motile sperm from testicular biopsies.
  • Performs sperm cryopreservation and thawing, and prepares embryos for transfer.
  • Ensures proper loading of catheters for embryo transfer and maintains equipment and supply inventory for IVF.
  • Revises stock levels of laboratory supplies and coordinates ordering of supplies and equipment with laboratory director and laboratory secretary.
  • Coordinates service arrangements with engineering and maintenance and ensures maintenance records are kept on equipment.
