About the position

The Senior Electrical Engineer position at Harvard University involves providing high-level electrical engineering expertise for the planning, design, technical support, and maintenance of the University's utility infrastructure, including electric, steam, hot water, and chilled water systems. The role requires collaboration with various departments to ensure the reliability and efficiency of utility services while adhering to safety and regulatory standards. The engineer will also engage in special projects, manage capital construction, and provide technical assistance to operational staff.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, refine, and maintain campus utility systems in partnership with E&F Leadership.
  • Oversee the installation and relocation of underground utility infrastructure with minimal impact to the community.
  • Assume complete engineering responsibility for utility distribution systems, ensuring capability, reliability, and safety.
  • Formulate long and short-range plans and budgets for utility distribution upgrades.
  • Maintain communication with governmental agencies to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
  • Provide technical assistance to Campus Services personnel for utility production and distribution systems.
  • Evaluate and recommend preventive maintenance and inspection programs for electrical distribution systems.
  • Act as the central engineering representative for the University, providing unbiased information based on sound engineering principles.
  • Interface with local utility suppliers and assist in utility metering and billing activities.
  • Perform utility rate analyses and evaluate alternative utility sources for the University.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Massachusetts
  • Minimum of ten years of professional level experience
  • Experience in master planning, design, installation, and operation of central utility systems
  • Experience managing capital construction projects

Nice-to-haves

  • Institutional, industrial, or utility company experience
  • Experience with underground electric distribution and medium-voltage substations
  • Familiarity with small scale power generation and renewable energy systems
  • Knowledge of electrical systems in complex buildings and labs
  • Experience with power system analysis software
  • Familiarity with electrical safety regulations
