About The Position

United Charter High Schools (UCHS) is seeking a Senior Director of Human Resources to lead and strengthen the people systems that power its network of seven charter high schools. This is a strategic executive role responsible for building and overseeing human capital strategy across the network, focusing on strong compliance, cultivating a healthy and inclusive culture, and designing systems to attract, develop, and retain exceptional educators and leaders. The Senior Director will serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and senior leadership team, partnering closely with Principals and campus leaders to ensure all adults at UCHS can thrive, ultimately benefiting the students. The role involves aligning HR strategy with network priorities, advising on workforce planning and organizational health, strengthening people systems for growth, coaching leaders on performance management and progressive discipline, and ensuring equitable practices across campuses. Additionally, the position oversees onboarding, compliance with employment laws, employee relations, benefits and leave administration, payroll processes, and maintaining robust HR systems for audit readiness. A key aspect is embedding UCHS core values into people practices, partnering with leaders to build inclusive environments, and designing consistent employee experience systems. The role also includes monthly monitoring of school-based staffing to ensure alignment with budget, compliance, and operational needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 7+ years of progressive HR leadership experience
  • Deep knowledge of NY employment law
  • Experience leading HR in multi-site or complex organizations
  • Strong executive presence and judgment
  • A belief that people systems should reflect mission and values

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Education, Public Policy, Human Resources, Business Management or a related field preferred
  • Experience in K–12 education, charter schools, or nonprofit organizations is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Align HR strategy with network priorities and long-term goals
  • Advise executive leadership and the Board on workforce planning and organizational health
  • Strengthen people systems to support a network of growing schools
  • Coach leaders on effective feedback, documentation, and progressive discipline
  • Lead performance management and leadership development processes
  • Ensure equitable and consistent practices across campuses
  • Oversee and continuously improve onboarding processes, ensuring effective systems that support employee integration and retention
  • Ensure full compliance with federal, New York State, and New York City employment laws and regulations
  • Oversee employee relations, including investigations, conflict resolution, and overall risk management
  • Lead the administration and compliance of employee benefits and leave programs (e.g., FMLA, disability, PTO), ensuring accuracy, equity, and regulatory adherence
  • Oversee payroll processes in partnership with Finance and external vendors, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with all applicable regulations
  • Maintain robust HR systems, reporting structures, and audit readiness to support organizational compliance and operational integrity
  • Embed UCHS core values into all people practices
  • Partner with leaders to build inclusive, high-expectation, mission-aligned environments
  • Design and implement clear, consistent employee experience systems across the network
  • Establish and oversee monthly monitoring of school-based staffing to ensure alignment with budget, compliance, and operational needs, proactively identifying and addressing individual school gaps
