About the position

The Senior Animal Care Technician at the University of Pittsburgh will perform essential administrative and facility support functions to ensure optimal operations within the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR). This role involves cagewash, equipment maintenance, sanitation activities, and providing animal husbandry and care to various laboratory animal species. The technician will also oversee documentation, manage inventory, and train staff, while ensuring compliance with safety protocols in a biohazard research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Process soiled animal caging and prepare clean caging and equipment for distribution.
  • Operate and validate various types of sanitation equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs to animal caging systems and sanitation equipment.
  • Oversee and maintain documentation regarding equipment functioning.
  • Manage inventory, orders, and receipts of supplies and services.
  • Standardize procedures and policies to maximize efficiencies and improve safety.
  • Train, mentor, and assist staff, providing leadership in the absence of the facility supervisor.
  • Provide animal husbandry and care, including feeding, watering, and health observations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related lab animal cagewash experience.
  • Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on mechanical equipment.
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficient with technology, including email, Microsoft Office, and learning new software applications.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and push/pull heavy equipment.
  • Pass mandatory criminal and social background checks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of criteria in the DLAR Career Development Program.
  • Child Protection Clearances, vaccinations, and TB testing may be required.
