About the position

The Senior Accountant at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) is responsible for providing high-level accounting and administrative support to campus accounting staff. This role involves accurate processing of journal entries, account reconciliation, and compliance with federal and state regulations. The Senior Accountant will interact with various stakeholders to deliver accounting services and maintain financial records, ensuring adherence to CU's fiscal policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Review, interpret and maintain compliance with federal and state legislation, rules, regulations, institutional policies and procedures.
  • Record, classify, and correct various financial transactions with journal entries.
  • Analyze and submit event reconciliations with journal entries.
  • Analyze and submit monthly interdepartmental cash transfer journal entries to fund Divisional departments.
  • Perform accounting period close activities.
  • Create reports, including routine financial statements, non-standard and/or ad hoc, for both internal and external audiences.
  • Review and approve journal entries and schedules for the Division Finance team as submitted by Divisional staff.
  • Reconcile assigned general ledger accounts.
  • Analyze data to ensure consistent application of financial policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a financial expert for assigned areas and assist with scheduling of monthly financial review meetings with Divisional departments.
  • Provide consultation and advising to campus personnel on accounting issues, accounting methods and business processes.
  • Create, evaluate and maintain procedures manual and work instructions for applicable areas of responsibility.
  • Perform pre and post audits of financial transactions, review and authorize transactions according to policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Accounting.
  • Professional accounting experience is required.
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation is mandatory.
  • Experience in financial operations (accounting, budget, or data analysis) in higher education is highly desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in COGNOS and PeopleSoft is preferred.
  • Experience with Peoplesoft Financials, CU Marketplace, Concur, and COGNOS reporting software is preferred.
  • Experience with Fund Accounting is preferred.
