About the position

The Seasonal Biological Technician for Trails at Marin County Parks is responsible for promoting sustainable trail access and restoring fragmented habitats in open spaces. This role involves a mix of trail monitoring, planning, maintenance, and compliance reporting, with a strong emphasis on project management and collaboration with various teams.

Responsibilities

• Work independently to inventory and monitor previously decommissioned, unsanctioned trails.
• Develop, organize, and lead habitat restoration efforts on unsanctioned trails.
• Support trail planning, construction, and maintenance projects with the Senior Natural Resources Planner and the Open Space District Trail Crew.
• Monitor mitigation sites and prepare compliance monitoring reports for mitigation projects.
• Coordinate with Open Space Ranger staff and lead crews to implement trail closure strategies and basic trail maintenance.
• Conduct field surveys in remote locations and treat invasive plants as needed.

Requirements

• Six months of experience in biological monitoring, wildlife surveying, habitat assessments, vegetation mapping and management, or trail management.
• Completion of 12 semester units or 18 quarter units of training and/or education in environmental science, forest/wildlife ecology, or biological science may substitute for the experience outlined above.
• Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving history.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with 4-wheel drive vehicle operations.
• Knowledge of local flora and fauna, historical and geological resources.
• Experience with digital mapping and data collection techniques, including ArcGIS.
