About the position

The Department of Art at the University of Maine seeks a Sculpture Studio Technician to assist with operations of its sculpture curriculum and facilities. The Technician coordinates, supports, and/or supervises various activities, including instruction; safety training and compliance; maintenance of specialized equipment (including kilns, furnaces, and power tools); student employees; and the purchase and tracking of supplies and equipment. Typical hiring range for this part-time (30 hours per week) position with a 9-month work year of September 1st to May 31st is $32,000 to $35,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date for this position is August 25, 2025 to allow for training and orientation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with operations of the sculpture curriculum and facilities.
  • Coordinate, support, and supervise various activities including instruction and safety training.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Maintain specialized equipment including kilns, furnaces, and power tools.
  • Supervise student employees.
  • Purchase and track supplies and equipment.

Requirements

  • BA/BFA Degree in Art or related field (previous experience may substitute for a college degree).
  • Familiarity with hot and cold glass working processes and equipment.
  • Familiarity with wood fabrication and carving tools.
  • Familiarity with metal shop processes and equipment.
  • Familiarity with lost wax and sand-casting processes.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing.
  • Working knowledge of budget and inventory management software and procedures.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of principles, procedures, and standards for the receipt, safe handling, storage, shipment, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Experience and skill to provide technical guidance and leadership to students.
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds, stand for long periods of time, and climb ladders.

  • Experience as sculpture studio technician.
  • Expertise in hot and cold glass working processes and equipment.
  • Experience with iron forging/metalsmithing.
  • Some experience in teaching and/or providing workshops.
  • Experience supervising student employees.
