About the position

The School Nurse at the Early Learning Center serves as a vital resource for managing the health care needs of special education students. This role involves coordinating communication between families, health care providers, and the school community to ensure that students receive appropriate care and support. The nurse will oversee individual health needs, promote wellness, and provide education to staff and students.

Responsibilities

  • Attend work in a regular, reliable, and punctual manner.
  • Coordinate services between health care providers, medical specialists, families, and school staff as necessary to meet the complete medical and functional needs of students.
  • Assess the student's current health needs, past and present treatment plans and services, prognosis, and short- and long-term goals.
  • Obtain pertinent information from health care providers with parent permission to help develop a plan of care for the student at school in collaboration with the process consultants.
  • Provide patient, family, and school staff education regarding the plan of care.
  • Develop a plan of care based upon the assessment and collection of information in collaboration with the IEP team with specific objectives, goals, and interventions to meet the needs of the student at school.
  • Oversee and evaluate the plan of care with the building nurse and staff to ensure the needs of the student are met. Monitor the progress of the plan of care and adjust accordingly.
  • Providing support to families by linking them to services and resources that may be needed.
  • Actively participate and attend team meetings with travel between buildings.
  • Participate in diagnostic screenings for vision, hearing, and health problems in conjunction with building nurses.
  • Assess situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student health services; providing information and complying with legal requirements.
  • Conduct age appropriate programs and/or activities in conjunction with classroom curriculum (e.g. health education, nutritional workshops, etc.) for the purpose of supporting established lesson plans.
  • Develop individual student care plans for the purpose of addressing students' health needs; providing direction to site personnel and/or implementing directors provided by parents and/or physicians.
  • Direct student health services for the purpose of prioritizing project activities, ensuring utilization of personnel in compliance with site requirements; and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Maintain contact with parents/guardians for the purpose of advising them of changes in student health and/or recommending further medical and/or emotional intervention.
  • Maintain students' confidential files and records (e.g. health care plans, agency referrals, accident reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.
  • Monitor students with chronic illness and/or injury for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns and initiating follow-up care.
  • Participate in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, and interdisciplinary teams for the purpose of gathering, conveying and/or sharing information on students health needs, service delivery, and educational programs; and/or improving skills and knowledge.
  • Prepare a wide variety of written materials (e.g. quantity reports, student services, correspondence, internal audits, core plans, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Provide training on a variety of health related subjects (e.g. CPR, disaster preparedness, child abuse, health education, medication management, policies and procedures, substance abuse, growth and development, food allergies, STD's, hygiene, etc.) for the purpose of promoting a healthy lifestyle and/or acting as a resource to students, teachers, and other school personnel.
  • Refer students requiring additional medical attention for the purpose of providing required follow-­-up treatment and services.
  • Report health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, contagious diseases, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students' personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
  • Research a variety of topics relating to health and medical care (e.g. wellness, nutrition, treatment protocols, childhood diseases, etc.) for the purpose of providing information to staff, students, and the public.
  • Respond to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls, prescription reactions, bleeding, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-­-up action.
  • Administer first aid, medication and specialized medical treatments (e.g. oral suctioning, catheterization, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
  • Administer mandated screenings (e.g. vision, dental, hearing and/or back/scoliosis screenings, etc.) for the purpose of referring medical conditions and/or providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.

Requirements

  • One to three years of professional nursing experience.
  • Must be a licensed, registered nurse in the state of Missouri.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications.
