About the position

The School Environmental Health, Safety, and Indoor Air Quality Program Lead serves as the technical lead for the Department of Health's efforts to enhance school health and safety programs across Washington. This role involves developing regulations and standards, training environmental health professionals, and providing expert testimony on environmental health matters. The position supports the mission of safeguarding public health by addressing environmental hazards in school environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop regulations and standards to support local health jurisdictions in enhancing school health and safety programs.
  • Train environmental health professionals and provide technical assistance on legislation and national standards.
  • Represent the Department of Health on state and national committees regarding environmental health and safety issues.
  • Provide expert testimony on environmental health matters to the legislature and the State Board of Health.

Requirements

  • Eight (8) or more years of experience in regulatory environmental health and safety guidelines in a local, state and/or federal regulatory or health services program.
  • A bachelor's degree in public health, environmental health, or allied science, and six (6) years of experience in regulatory guidelines in a local, state and/or federal regulatory or health services program.
  • A master's degree in public health, environmental health, or allied science, and four (4) years of experience in regulatory guidelines in a local, state and/or federal regulatory or health services program.
  • Two (2) years of experience specific to an environmental health and safety program interpreting and applying related rules and guidance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Registered as a Sanitarian in either Washington State or by the National Environmental Health Association.
  • Two (2) years of experience in environmental health and safety inspections at school facilities.
  • Two (2) years of experience conducting compliance inspections.
