About The Position

Regulates, directs, and controls pedestrians at a designated school crossing while children are going to and from school. Works with considerable independence under the general supervision of the Police Chief, or assigned designee. This position is considered an emergency/disaster position. During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation, which requires that the employee be ready, willing, and able to report to work during emergencies and/or disasters of any kind, notwithstanding any other commitments the employee may have and be able perform emergency services duties, as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must successfully pass a physical and complete the required training for School Crossing Guards before starting job.
  • Must obtain the Florida School Crossing Guard Certification, and re-certify annually.
  • Pass Police Department background screening including a drug screen.
  • Possess certification in First-Aid or obtain this certification within three months of employment.
  • Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently verbally and in written English.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Must be able to handle the stress of working in a high traffic environment.
  • Must be able to work with school age children.

Responsibilities

  • Remains standing at the school crossing in full view of passing traffic for a specified period of time.
  • Guides and directs pedestrians and school children through busy intersections utilizing issued safety gear and hand motions to ensure pedestrian safety.
  • Remains alert for possible safety concerns at school crossing.
  • Reports emergencies, equipment defects, and traffic dangers.
  • Records and reports license number of potentially dangerous vehicles.
  • Completes forms and writes reports when necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
