About the position

Under general supervision, assists school children safely across the street; reports problems requiring possible police action; performs other related duties as required. Requests school children to wait at the curb for safe crossing and to dismount from bicycles or remove roller skates; halts traffic by hand signals, giving due consideration to the distance required to stop and the avoidance of unnecessary traffic congestion; escorts children safely across the street; signals for traffic to resume; reports persons seen loitering around schools for extended periods to the Police Department; reports license numbers of traffic violators to the Police Department. Responsible for regular attendance and arriving to work on time.

Responsibilities

• Assist school children safely across the street.
• Report problems requiring possible police action.
• Request school children to wait at the curb for safe crossing.
• Halt traffic by hand signals considering stopping distance and traffic congestion.
• Escort children safely across the street.
• Signal for traffic to resume after crossing.
• Report loitering individuals around schools to the Police Department.
• Report license numbers of traffic violators to the Police Department.
• Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
• Ability to distinguish colors: red, yellow, green.
• Ability to see oncoming cars.
• Ability to stand for prolonged periods in inclement weather.
• Knowledge of traffic laws.
• Valid Class 'C' driver's license.
• Good driving record in accordance with the driving standards established by the City of Rowlett.
• Must report all traffic citations to the departmental Director or designee within two working days.
