About the position
The Saw Filer Technician is responsible for maintaining band saws to meet company quality standards. This role involves performing various tasks related to the swaging, shaping, and sharpening of band saws, ensuring compliance with industrial standards and company policies. The technician will also evaluate tension levels, weld teeth and cracks using MIG welding techniques, and maintain proper tooth profiles. The position requires teamwork, as the technician will assist others in the positioning and grinding of band saws, and must be capable of handling heavy equipment safely. Additionally, the technician is accountable for the housekeeping in the file room and around the machine center, ensuring a safe working environment.
Responsibilities
- Performs all swaging, shaping, and sharpening of band saws ensuring conformance to both industrial standards and company quality policies.
- Evaluates degrees of tension and ensures proper leveling while maintaining backs of all single cut band saws.
- Welds teeth and cracks using proper MIG welding techniques and upholds all safety requirements.
- Anneals welded areas using oxygen/acetylene torch with proper technique.
- Maintains 'shape up' diamonds and adjustments to achieve proper tooth profiles.
- Assists others in the positioning and grinding of band saws in a team environment.
- Changes and installs heavy band saws ranging in weight from 75 to 100 lbs.
- Knowledgeable in the safe operation of all mill equipment machines including band mills, edgers, gang saws, and trimmers.
- Assists in evaluating the quality performance of the saw and machine center.
- Exercises good judgment when removing, installing, or transporting saws to avoid injury and property damage.
- Held accountable for carriage drives and line bar hydraulics.
- May be required to lift boards/equipment ranging in weight from 25 - 100 lbs.
- Capable of climbing stairs and performing frequent twisting, turning, and bending.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience preferred in saw filing or related field.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Strong mechanical and precision measurement aptitude for trainees.
