About the position

The Safety Specialist will provide comprehensive environmental health and safety (EHS) support for one of the nation's premier research organizations, focused on developing a compact, cost-effective commercial fusion power source. This is a full-time position requiring a proactive approach to maintaining workplace safety and ensuring compliance with EHS standards.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a Safe Worksite: Perform daily site walks, conduct risk assessments, and facilitate EHS communications to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Conduct Inspections: Regularly inspect workplaces to evaluate compliance with EHS standards and identify hazards.
  • Recommend Corrective Measures: Document and propose corrective actions for identified safety risks.
  • Project Oversight: Provide guidance on EHS-related matters for ongoing projects.
  • Promote Safety Culture: Engage with management, employees, and contractors to foster a positive safety culture.
  • Train Employees: Develop and deliver safety training programs to ensure employee knowledge of safety protocols.
  • Professional Interaction: Communicate professionally with employees, vendors, and other stakeholders to maintain safety.
  • Other Duties: Perform additional safety-related tasks as assigned to support organizational goals.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of experience in health and safety roles, preferably in a laboratory or research setting.
  • Proven experience managing chemical waste and hazardous materials.
  • Experience delivering safety training, including toolbox talks, and conducting risk assessments.
  • Strong knowledge of NFPA 70E, OSHA, Cal OSHA, Cal CUPA, and other regulatory compliance standards.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety standards and hazardous materials handling.
  • Ability to prioritize safety projects and perform duties with minimal oversight.
  • Comfortable conducting large group safety training and working with diverse teams.
  • Reliable transportation to ensure timely travel between offices (Irvine & Foothill Ranch) as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certifications such as GSP, ASP, CSP (BCSP), CSMC, CEM, or EHS (NASP) are a strong plus.
