About the position

The primary purpose of the Safety Specialist position is to provide technical expertise to resolve safety issues involving personnel, visitors, patients and other institutional staff and contractors. Performs and completes special projects as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness with applicable laws, regulations and national guidelines relevant to section functions and responsibilities. Completes environmental and safety policy review and development risk assessment, incident investigations, report writing and presentations to management in order to communicate risk and solutions. Assists in drafting comments on proposed state and federal regulations as needed. Duties may include functions in any or all of the following areas: Fire and Life Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Radiation Safety, Emergency Preparedness and Joint Commission, Environmental Protection, Construction Safety and Biological, Chemical and Laboratory Safety.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the management and process flow of various Laboratory Safety programs (laboratory audits, lab moves, safety seal, etc.)
  • Assists in the review and monitoring of programs for effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Responds to internal institutional incidents such as hazardous chemical/biological spills.
  • Assists in maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental compliance guidelines and regulations.
  • Provides regulatory interpretations, technical assistance, and recommendations related to laboratory safety programs.
  • Provides training to safety technicians and customers on laboratory safety program management operations, regulations and requirements to maintain compliance.
  • Manages institutional electronic repository for safety data sheets, MSDSOnline.
  • Develops, reviews and disseminates documentation relating to Laboratory Safety programs and processes.
  • Conducts and revises Laboratory Safety program training.
  • Develops and maintains Laboratory Safety communication programs for institutional and division.
  • Conducts metrics and data analysis for performance measurement, budget forecasts, and program recommendations.
  • Documents data and generates reports for departmental evaluation.
  • Enters data into mobile devices while working away from workstation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Class A, B or C valid Texas driver's license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried.
  • Experience with Laboratory Safety Programs, laboratory design and construction.
  • Strong biological or chemical backgrounds in academic centers.
  • Knowledge of NIH rDNA Guidelines, IBC, IACUC, Laboratory inspection, Risk assessment, DOT/IATA shipping, hazardous material transport or shipping, HAZWOPER.
