About The Position

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and manual tasks in the maintenance of County roads, and traffic control signs and pavement markings, and related areas and structures; to operate heavy trucks and other road maintenance equipment; and to perform related work as required. This is the second level in the Road Maintenance class series and is distinguished from the next higher class of Road Maintenance Worker III by assignment to maintenance equipment in either road maintenance or traffic control which is of moderate complexity of operation.

Requirements

  • Methods, materials, safety practices and tools used in road maintenance and traffic control; operation and preventive maintenance of trucks and heavy road maintenance equipment or road striping equipment.
  • Understand oral and written instructions; perform a variety of manual tasks; demonstrate strength, agility, and endurance; keep simple records; demonstrate mechanical aptitude; work cooperatively with others.
  • One (1) year of experience as a Road Maintenance Worker I with Shasta County, OR Two (2) years of road construction or road maintenance experience which must have included sufficient experience or training to have attained skillful proficiency in the operation of at least one of the types of equipment specified for this class.
  • Possession of a valid Class A California driver license or the ability to obtain a Class A driver’s license within six (6) months.
  • Able to drive and be insured under the County insurability requirements, per Shasta County Personnel Rules , Chapter 33, as part of your job duties.
  • Acknowledge this position requires a valid Class A California driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • At least two years of experience in road construction work including patching broken or eroded pavement, and repairing guard rails, highway markers and fences.
  • Prior working knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions including traffic control is essential to this position.
  • A flagging certification is highly desired.
  • Competent in operating various heavy machinery and equipment, including trucks, snowplows, and specialized road maintenance vehicles common to the road construction and maintenance field.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and performs minor field maintenance, repair and adjustment to maintenance equipment: heavy three axle trucks, rollers, patch trucks, water trucks, chippers, forklifts and loaders; operates other road maintenance equipment as a secondary assignment as needed; may operate snow removal equipment; performs related non-operator tasks as required; may be assigned to lead a crew of temporary workers, such as Welfare recipients, assigned to a variety of routine road maintenance projects; maintains individual operating records; may be required to operate heavier pieces of equipment normally associated with higher levels in the class series on a temporary, emergency or relief basis for training purposes.
