About the position

The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) provides compassionate, trauma-informed care to victims of violence and perpetrators, ensuring professional standards and confidentiality. The role involves performing forensic examinations, documenting injuries, and coordinating care with law enforcement and advocacy agencies. The FNE is responsible for maintaining clinical expertise, participating in ongoing education, and adhering to protocols established by the Forensic Department at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complete physical and forensic examinations including head-to-toe assessments and detailed genital examinations.
  • Collect and document specimens and evidence accurately, including digital photography.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to evidence protocols for each case.
  • Triage forensic patients and assess the need for medical examination and treatment.
  • Communicate effectively with Emergency Department staff and facilitate patient transfers.
  • Perform quality assurance functions including documentation appropriateness and mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Provide court testimony and prepare for testifying in cases as needed.
  • Encourage patients to make informed decisions regarding their care during forensic exams.
  • Collaborate with treatment teams to support patient-centered care and provide community resource information.
  • Promote trauma-informed care initiatives within the organization.

Requirements

  • Current State Registered Nurse License or higher.
  • Completion of the required state course for FNE/SANE training (2-40 hours or 64-hour course).
  • Ability to apply basic nursing principles and demonstrate excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in critical thinking and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent nursing documentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • SANE-A and SANE-P certifications preferred.
