About the position

As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the RN - PACU at Carle Foundation Hospital contributes professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients through the application of the nursing process. This role is critical in ensuring that patients receive high-quality care during their recovery in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). The RN will be responsible for assessing patients' status through interviews, observations, and physical assessments, developing individualized care plans, and implementing appropriate interventions to achieve expected patient outcomes. The RN will also systematically evaluate and document patients' progress, modifying care plans as necessary based on ongoing assessments and changes in patient conditions. The RN - PACU will demonstrate clinical excellence by promoting evidence-based practices and maintaining current knowledge in nursing practices. This includes performing patient bedside lab testing, obtaining lab specimens, and ensuring compliance with hospital procedures. The RN will also coordinate interdisciplinary care, collaborating with team members to meet patient needs and advocating for patients when necessary. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the RN will provide goal-focused shift reports and utilize strategies to enhance team performance and patient outcomes. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the RN will focus on patient education, assessing and adapting teaching strategies to meet the specific needs of patients and their families. This includes considering cultural, age-specific, and developmental factors when providing information about procedures and hospital experiences. The RN will ensure patient safety by adhering to policies and procedures and following National Patient Safety Goals. Overall, this position requires a commitment to professional development, collaboration, and a patient-centered approach to care.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patient's status through interview, observation, and physical assessment of actual problems and outcomes.
  • Develop an individualized plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
  • Use appropriate interventions identified in the plan of care to achieve expected patient outcomes.
  • Systematically evaluate and document patient's progress toward expected outcomes/goals on an ongoing basis throughout the shift.
  • Modify plan of care based on evaluation and as needed based on changes in patient condition.
  • Complete required documentation as appropriate, including patient chart and event reports.
  • Demonstrate professional accountability for own practice as evidenced through seeking resources and continued self-development.
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge of equipment and troubleshoot when problems arise.
  • Acquire and maintain current knowledge and skills in evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Promote the professional development of self and team members.
  • Share clinical knowledge through informal teaching and in response to the learning needs of others.
  • Demonstrate a practical problem-solving approach to patient moving and handling issues (as applicable).
  • Demonstrate skills to promote patient and staff safety through appropriate use of lift equipment (as applicable).
  • Possess knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing.
  • Perform patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control in compliance with medical provider's orders and hospital lab procedures/policies.
  • Coordinate the interdisciplinary care of the patient through collaboration with team members and utilize additional resources when necessary.
  • Analyze clinical situations in a systematic way and act to obtain resources or correct problems to meet or exceed expected outcomes or patient needs.
  • Recognize need for assistance and utilize resources, including physician and nurse to nurse (UAT) consultation in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate ownership and persistence to ensure problem is resolved in the best way possible.
  • Assume assignment of non-complex and some complex patient management with some turnover in assignment.
  • Consistently prioritize work based on changes in patient condition, changes in assignment, and unanticipated interruptions.
  • Identify and utilize team resources to solve identified problems or needs.
  • Collaborate with the health care team in the organization of tasks and activities for the patient's care from admission to discharge according to the plan of care and to meet identified expected outcomes.
  • Work with other team members in delegating tasks and activities appropriately.
  • Provide goal-focused shift report.
  • Advocate with physicians on patient's behalf when necessary.
  • Utilize communication and teamwork strategies aimed at promoting high team performance and achieving optimal patient outcomes and unit productivity.
  • Choose an appropriate and meaningful communication style when interacting with others: gives and accepts constructive feedback to/from peers.
  • Assess and choose teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's/family's age-specific needs.
  • Adapt teaching strategies based on patient's response, readiness to learn, and level of comprehension.
  • Ensure patient safety in the hospital environment by following policy/procedures and adhering to National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Consult appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
  • Utilize SVI patient education system as a resource for patients and family members.

Requirements

  • College Diploma in Nursing required.
  • Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License in Illinois upon hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA) within 30 days of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (AHA) within 1 year of hire.
  • Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser.
  • Fluent in English, with the ability to write, read, comprehend, and speak.
  • Multicultural sensitivity and critical thinking skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) encouraged to be completed in the coming years.
