About The Position

The Primary Purpose of this role is to provide quality patient care following established standards using the nursing process to maintain a safe environment. The Charge RN will also provide patient and family education and ensure proper documentation for billing. This role performs other duties as assigned. The policies associated with the job’s purpose and essential responsibilities are set by others. The role involves making alterations in patient assessment, determining patient educational requirements, and deciding when to contact the physician. It also has some formal supervisory responsibility.

Requirements

  • RN degree required
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Missouri or compact licensure to practice in Missouri required
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS and NIH Stroke Certification required within 90 days of being hired
  • Annual stroke education hours per hospital policy
  • NVCI or equivalent class as determined to be required by the facility

Responsibilities

  • Performs the assessment phase of the nursing process, including ensuring timely patient placement, completing admission assessments, assessing age-specific needs, identifying learning needs, and performing pain assessments.
  • Performs the planning phase of the nursing process, including completing individualized care plans, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, interpreting abnormal patient findings, conducting patient introductions and goal setting using the 'AIDET' model, updating whiteboards, and ensuring bedside report.
  • Performs the implementation phase of the nursing process, including implementing patient care, documenting and reporting abnormal findings, managing equipment, acting effectively during emergencies, administering medications, ensuring provider orders are recorded, following fall protocols, managing controlled substances and narcotic counts, attaching patient identification bands, making staff assignments, facilitating interdepartmental communication, assisting with discharge, addressing patient/provider concerns, and rounding on patients.
  • Provides patient and family education based on assessments, using appropriate terminology, re-assessing learning needs, documenting education provided, and providing/documenting discharge follow-up instructions.
  • Demonstrates accountability to the nursing process through documentation, including clear documentation of interventions, methods used, time of implementation, and patient response, using only approved abbreviations, and following hospital and departmental policies for documentation.
  • Maintains a safe and comfortable unit by checking code blue carts, ensuring alarms are audible, removing malfunctioning equipment, completing repair requisitions, assigning/completing the job duty list, utilizing correct patient identification methods, barcode scanning for medication administration, completing patient assignment records, assessing staffing needs, and providing thorough handoff communication.
  • Develops and promotes unit/hospital initiatives by planning, developing, and evaluating self-objectives, participating in problem-solving and improvement initiatives for the Medical Surgical unit, implementing planned changes, evaluating planned changes, and attending unit staff meetings.
