About the position

The Antennas and Electromagnetics Department at Penn State University's Applied Research Laboratory is seeking an entry-level Research and Development Engineer to engage in complex RF Propagation projects. The role focuses on RF Propagation research from ELF to millimeter wave, utilizing accepted methods to design, develop, and implement RF propagation models while considering environmental effects. The position offers opportunities for innovative problem-solving and collaboration with major research sponsors.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement RF propagation models considering environmental effects such as space weather and meteorology.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of engineering products, systems, and subsystems using RF propagation models.
  • Develop novel techniques in RF propagation, including new mathematical derivations of electromagnetic phenomena.
  • Conduct RF propagation experiments/tests in laboratory and field settings to validate theoretical propositions.
  • Document data and findings in technical reports, documents, or presentations.
  • Create opportunities to improve RF propagation modeling and analysis capabilities.
  • Provide innovative problem-solving approaches to enhance RF propagation modeling and analysis capabilities.
  • Learn strategic objectives and applications of RF propagation modeling analysis and develop relationships with research sponsors.
  • Research and identify follow-on research projects and contribute to technical proposals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science related discipline.
  • Experience in RF Propagation mathematical methods and their application to solve specific problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to document research findings in whitepapers and technical reports.
  • Proven experience implementing scientific or technical solutions independently with guidance from mentors.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with end-to-end design, implementation, and testing of technical solutions.
  • Effective presentation skills in front of large groups of senior professionals.
  • Fluency in multiple scientific programming languages such as Matlab, Python, C++, and FORTRAN.
