About The Position

Connective is a dynamic non-profit organization dedicated to creating safe, healthy, and inclusive communities. This new, temporary position, funded by the British Columbia Civil Forfeiture Grant Program, will significantly expand the program's capacity by focusing on supporting affected parties and their supporters throughout the restorative justice process. The role involves programmatic operations, primarily case management of affected parties. Key responsibilities include leading intake assessments, mentoring on cases, and creating individualized case plans. The Affected Parties Case Worker will work under the supervision of the Program Manager to build restorative processes around the needs of those harmed, preparing them for restorative circles and other healing processes. This position will also contribute to the screening, training, and coordination of volunteers. In this program, 'affected party' is used in place of 'victim,' and 'responsible party' in place of 'offender.'

Requirements

  • Ability to successfully complete a Criminal Records Check
  • Ability to successfully complete a Reference Check
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate (please refer to the Certificates accepted in B.C. - WorkSafeBC)
  • Class 5 driver’s license/Reliable vehicle
  • Successful educational verification
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Personal transportation that is in good repair, insured for business up to $1,000,000 for liability, and which can be used to transport clients
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada, observe their weekly hours limit if under a temporary or study visa, and provide proof of eligibility if selected for the role.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with youth and adults in a restorative or social justice environment, particularly motivational interviewing and facilitating victim-offender dialogues
  • Possess basic counselling skills.
  • Post-secondary training: mental health certificate, degree in human services, criminology, social work, community support worker diploma or a related field and/or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education, training or experience is required.
  • Good understanding the values and principles of restorative justice and sound knowledge of trauma-informed practice.
  • Awareness and openness to Indigenous perspectives; respects that restorative practices must be flexible and appropriately informed in order to respond to the cultural and/or spiritual needs of individuals.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with community services that support and assist individuals.
  • Working understanding of issues and concerns of youth and adult responsible parties and affected parties.
  • Keen awareness of issues facing diverse communities, including systemic barriers and issues stemming from colonialization.
  • Self-awareness and ability to acknowledge one’s biases, prejudices, and triggers.
  • Active listener, intuitive, collaborative, and curious in approach.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake assessments with affected parties to determine program suitability, identify client needs, and explore potential outcomes.
  • Participate in team case management debriefings; identify presenting issues, support challenging files, and determine types of restorative processes to initiate, given the circumstances of the file.
  • Work closely with affected parties, community contacts, and other stakeholders to ensure processes are inclusive, needs-based, and trauma-informed.
  • Provide one-on-one supports to ensure victims have information, voice, and choice throughout the restorative process.
  • Network with new and existing community-serving organizations and direct program participants to a wide variety of local support services and resources.
  • Maintain robust records of all relevant qualitative and quantitative case information, correspondence with referral agents, and volunteer activities in Salesforce and other data collection systems.
  • Ensure files are processed in a timely manner and/or in accordance with the Restorative Justice Program’s Agreement for Services with the City of Nanaimo.
  • Provide updates to referring individuals and organizations on case progress on a bi-weekly basis at minimum.
  • Adhere to professional guidelines with respect to client confidentiality.
  • Assist the Program Coordinator and Case Worker with volunteer engagement including conducting orientations, co-facilitating monthly volunteer meetings, organizing training sessions, and monitoring volunteer/affected party relationships.
  • Model professional expectations of dress, daily work habits, and interpersonal communication; representing the organization and program in the community.
  • Attend appropriate staff training sessions, including programmatic staff development opportunities.
