About the position

The Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for providing respiratory care, advanced airway management, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This role involves working closely with nursing staff and requires accountability for organizing and delivering high-quality care to patients, adhering to hospital policies and the Watson Model of Care. The practitioner will also engage in patient assessments, therapy recommendations, and collaboration with healthcare teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient assessments and provide appropriate respiratory therapy based on admitting diagnosis and pulmonary pathophysiology.
  • Evaluate and document data from respiratory monitoring devices for assigned patients.
  • Assess patient's response to respiratory care and document required information as per department policies.
  • Determine appropriateness of respiratory care services and provide recommendations considering patient age and cognitive abilities.
  • Initiate new routine orders within specified time frames according to department policies.
  • Measure and adjust airway cuff pressures as needed.
  • Recommend changes in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to healthcare team members.
  • Modify treatment techniques to optimize care delivery without changing physician's orders.
  • Utilize the chain-of-command for consulting on patients not responding to standard procedures.
  • Perform respiratory diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including ventilatory support during transfers.
  • Disinfect respiratory equipment and adhere to infection control policies.
  • Conduct blood gas analysis and ensure proper handling of blood samples.
  • Perform CPR and respond to emergencies across all areas of the hospital.
  • Auscultate lungs to ensure proper endotracheal tube placement and identify contraindications for chest physiotherapy.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team on suctioning frequency for patients.
  • Participate in patient and family education regarding chronic pulmonary disorders and medication management.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Participate in the department's Quality and Performance Improvement Plan.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) approved school.
  • Passage of the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) certification examination.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in an acute care setting.
  • Current California Respiratory Care Practitioner license.
  • National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual skills (Spanish) preferred.

  • Electronic Medical Record experience preferred.
