About the position

The Research Internship at Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) offers advanced PhD students a unique opportunity to engage in sociotechnical research that addresses critical contemporary issues. Interns will collaborate with a team of social scientists to explore the cultural, political, and ethical implications of digital systems, contributing to innovative research across various disciplines. This 12-week internship emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and community engagement, allowing interns to advance their research careers while contributing to impactful projects.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with fellow doctoral candidates and researchers on sociotechnical research projects.
  • Present research findings and contribute to the lab's community activities.
  • Attend weekly lab colloquia and participate in discussions with peers and mentors.
  • Develop and propose a research project that aligns with MSRNE's themes and can be completed within the internship duration.
  • Engage in networking opportunities with other interns and researchers.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program.
  • Advanced to candidacy (or equivalent) in their PhD program by May 2025.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in qualitative or quantitative research methods.
  • Familiarity with sociotechnical perspectives and their application to technology and society.
