About the position

The Research Engineering/Scientist Associate V supports the transition of foundational research developed in the Controls Group for Distributed and Uncertain Systems (CDUS Group) within the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics as well as from other robotics research groups at UT Austin. This position requires close coordination with external research partners, including support for directly transitioning some of the algorithms and software products developed at UT Austin into government in-house facilities. The role involves research in coordinated robotics and air vehicles for use in dynamic and uncertain environments, particularly with imperfect communication, and/or military applications. The position is expected to continue until August 31, 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Carries out research in coordinated robotics and air vehicles for use in dynamic and uncertain environments, particularly with imperfect communication, and/or military applications though other application areas may be considered.
  • Supports deliverables related to autonomous mobile systems, networked control, vehicle coordination, swarming, and human-machine interfaces.
  • Helps supervise lab members.
  • Supports efforts to maintain or obtain research funding from federal agencies and industry.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree and six years of experience.
  • Knowledge of the Robot Operating System (ROS), Python, and C++ preferably with a history of creating or contributing to the ROS software base and autopilots for unmanned air vehicles.
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to multitask.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate administrative information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Strong listening skills and a focus on customer advocacy.
  • Extensive experience with MS Office products.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% to work with project stakeholders and sponsors/customers.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience conducting research, including experience contributing to or authoring scholarly publications in archival journals, filing of patent applications, and/or having received research funding from governmental and private funding agencies.
  • Experience in software integration. Experience with microcontrollers and network simulators.
  • Working knowledge of the application areas: multi-agent systems, tactical deployments and coordination, communication network modeling, and the defense industry.
  • Experience with controlled unclassified information (CUI) and export control compliance.
