About The Position

Under supervision, the intern will assist Research & Development scientists with laboratory and field work for various research projects dealing with wastewater purification by microfiltration (MF), reverse osmosis (RO) and ultraviolet light/advanced oxidation process (UV/AOP), as well as water quality analyses (chemical and microbial). While supervised, will perform sample collection, media and reagents preparation, operation of laboratory and other equipment, laboratory analyses, and cleaning and maintenance of glassware and bench workspace. This position requires a minimum of 20 hours per week. This is a year-round internship, not a summer internship.

Requirements

  • Current full-time undergraduate or Master’s-level (preferred) student with an emphasis in one or more fields related to water treatment and/or water recycling, including chemistry, microbiology or molecular biology, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, or equivalent.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret laboratory protocols, documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong organizational, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • A valid California Class “C” Driver’s License and proof of automobile insurance are required.
  • Interns must be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited bachelor's or graduate program related to this field.
  • Interns must have at least one year or more remaining in school.
  • Must submit proof of full-time enrollment, class schedules, and grades each semester/quarter.
  • Must submit an OCWD online employment application.
  • Candidates given an offer of employment will be required to pass a medical examination and background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous laboratory experience in handling chemicals, conducting laboratory work, performing and documenting experiments, or completed science courses.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
