About the position

Sanford Burnham Prebys is a preeminent, independent biomedical research institute dedicated to understanding human biology and disease and advancing scientific discoveries to profoundly impact human health. For over 40 years, our research has produced breakthroughs in cancer, neuroscience, immunology, and children's diseases, and is anchored by our NCI-designated cancer center and advanced drug discovery capabilities. An exciting opportunity is available in the Commisso lab to study pancreatic cancer for candidates with histology, image analysis, and in-vivo experience to assist with preclinical research.

Responsibilities

  • The duties and responsibilities of this position will be approximately 50% histology and image analysis with the remaining time dedicated to assisting with ongoing projects and laboratory operations.
  • Independently perform histology (IHC, IF, ICC) and image analysis.
  • Perform in-vitro experiments including but not limited to cell culture, DNA/RNA/protein extraction, PCR, qPCR, Western Blotting, flow cytometry, and ELISA.
  • Perform pre-surgery preparations including shaving of mice, ear tagging, and surgery area setup.
  • Assist with surgeries and perform routine dosing using different routes such as PO, SC, IP, IV.
  • Perform tumor measurements using caliper or ultrasound, body weight, clinical observations.
  • Blood collection, tissue harvesting, necropsies.
  • Support mouse breeding colony and disease models including breeding setup and genotyping.
  • Support laboratory operations including stocking supplies, inventory, and database maintenance.
  • Perform general duties to support the safe and efficient operation of the laboratory as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • A Master and/or Bachelor of Science degree along with a minimum of 2 years of experience working in a research laboratory in academia or industry.
  • Highly proficient in histology processes and image analysis using open-source software including ImageJ and QuPath.
  • Experience with cell culture, PCR, Western blotting and techniques essential for biomedical research.
  • Experience in handling mice, including athymic nude mice and genetically engineered mouse (GEM) models.

  • Must be flexible to work occasional schedule change including potential for early morning, evening, holidays, or weekend hours to be shared across team members.
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivation, and ability to adapt in a dynamic team environment.
  • Position requires strong time management, communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office, Prism, ImageJ/Fiji, QuPath.
