About the position

The Research Assistant Professor position at Texas A&M Agrilife Research focuses on conducting policy analysis in agricultural economics, specifically for the U.S. Congress. This role is a 9-month, non-tenured, 100% research appointment located in College Station, Texas, within the Department of Agricultural Economics. The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty and staff to analyze row crop policy proposals, publish findings, and support departmental teaching needs.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a team setting with AFPC faculty and staff to develop and maintain representative crop farms.
  • Lead the economic analysis of row crop policy proposals as requested by Congress and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct economic analyses related to row crop policy and production economics, publish results in peer-reviewed outlets, and present results to members of Congress and their staff.
  • Participate in other research projects in support of AFPC's policy analysis contracts and interests.
  • Develop proposals for projects to be supported by extramural funding.
  • Support departmental teaching needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in agricultural economics, economics, or a related field
  • Experience working with row crop producers across the United States, including in focus group meetings to collect primary data.
  • Experience working with the FARM ESP simulation model.
  • Experience creating basic models in Python and modifying existing Python code.
  • Ability to effectively and clearly communicate the results of complex economic analyses to diverse audiences, including national policy makers.
  • Working knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software; use of standard office equipment and personal computers; interpersonal and communication skills; basic planning and organizational skills; ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Nice-to-haves

  • Track record of successful publication in Agricultural Economics.
  • Detailed knowledge of U.S. commodity and insurance programs.
  • Detailed knowledge of U.S. tax policy impacting agricultural operations.
  • Experience working with large-scale integrated software and database systems for economic modeling.
