About the position

The Per-Diem Registered Nurse at Helen Keller Services is responsible for assessing and treating the healthcare needs of participants who are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. This role requires a well-experienced RN who can work independently and provide nursing support during emergencies or staff absences. The RN will also educate participants on medication administration and health promotion strategies, ensuring a holistic approach to their care.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and treat the health care needs of participants (emergent, urgent, and routine).
  • Administer medications to participants who are unable to self-administer.
  • Monitor participants' responses to medications and report findings to healthcare providers.
  • Conduct medication education classes to foster independence in medication administration.
  • Provide health education on health promotion, illness prevention, nutrition, and exercise.
  • Administer vaccinations as indicated for participants and staff.
  • Perform health assessments to identify new symptoms or complications.
  • Execute medical regimens as prescribed by licensed healthcare providers.
  • Arrange outside medical appointments and accompany participants as necessary.
  • Create supply orders for medical stock for approval by the Director of Medical Services.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a New York State approved education program as a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Possess a valid, unencumbered NYS RN license and registration.
  • Hold a current and valid CPR certification with AED approved for healthcare providers.
  • Sufficient clinical experience to perform essential duties without direct supervision.
  • Knowledge of MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong report writing skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of deaf and deaf-blind culture.
  • Methods of communication used by persons who are DeafBlind at a conversational level.
