About the position

The Registered Nurse (RN) position in the 9ST Cardiac Surgical unit at Advocate Aurora Health involves providing specialized care to adult patients undergoing cardiovascular surgeries, including heart transplants and ventricular assist devices. The role emphasizes patient-centered care, collaboration with healthcare teams, and adherence to nursing standards to ensure high-quality patient outcomes. The RN will participate in a two-phase orientation, focusing on both general cardiac surgical care and the complexities of advanced cardiac procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Use the nursing process to assess patient needs and implement individualized care plans.
  • Involve patients and families in care planning and maintain therapeutic relationships.
  • Anticipate and recognize significant changes in patient conditions and respond appropriately.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to coordinate patient-centered care.
  • Implement strategies to enhance patient safety and reduce risks.
  • Assess patient and family readiness to learn and tailor educational approaches accordingly.
  • Coordinate discharge plans using an interdisciplinary approach.
  • Apply evidence-based practices in patient care delivery.
  • Evaluate patient, team, and unit outcomes and take action as needed.
  • Support shared governance initiatives to improve patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Assume a leadership role within the care team and delegate tasks appropriately.
  • Promote a culture of safety by identifying and addressing potential threats to patient safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance departmental functions and patient experiences.
  • Engage in professional development activities and complete required competencies.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state of practice.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Completion of an accredited nursing program.
  • Typically requires 1 year of clinical nursing experience.
  • Proficient computer skills, including electronic medical records systems.
  • Excellent communication, listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop rapport and maintain professional relationships with patients and team members.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make critical, independent decisions.
