Registered nurses (RNs) perform a number of duties, including treating patients, educating patients, and providing advice and support to patients' families. RNs record patients' medical histories, ask about symptoms, analyze test results, administer treatment, administer medications, help with rehabilitation, able to lift 50 lbs. or more and operate medical equipment. As patient advocates, they must be mindful of what is best for the patient at all times, be responsible and detail-oriented, give patients and their families advice and emotional support, examine and assess patients' conditions, determine when assistance is required, and be aware of residents' rights. Equally important, they need the emotional stability to cope with human suffering, medical emergencies, and other stresses. RNs must observe procedures to minimize infection, chemical contamination, and needle sticks. RNs will need to be on-call and available to work on short notice.
