About the position

The Registered Nurse (RN) position within the Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP) at the Department of Veterans Affairs is a vital role that focuses on providing exceptional healthcare to veterans. As a Registered Nurse in the RRTP, the RN will conduct assessments of mental health behaviors and implement appropriate interventions as ordered by healthcare providers. Responsibilities include obtaining baseline vital signs, documenting patient information in the computerized patient record system (CPRS), and participating in the admissions and discharge processes alongside the admissions team. The RN will also be required to utilize medical equipment such as a breathalyzer, maintain competencies for equipment and procedures, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to influence care outcomes. The role demands adherence to unit-based protocols and the completion of mandatory annual competencies. The RN will be accountable for all elements of the nursing process, which includes assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care based on age-specific components. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of the individual characteristics of patients, including their age, health status, cultural background, and personal values. The RN will administer medications and procedures according to established policies and guidelines, and will actively participate in performance improvement activities and customer service programs at both the unit and service line levels. Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments of mental health behaviors and implement appropriate interventions as ordered by providers.
  • Obtain baseline vital signs, weight, height, and document findings in the computerized patient record system (CPRS).
  • Participate in the admissions and discharge processes alongside the admissions team.
  • Utilize medical equipment such as a breathalyzer and document findings in the patient medical record per policy.
  • Complete mandatory and annual competencies for equipment and procedures, and adhere to unit-based protocols.
  • Maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and work collaboratively with other disciplines in the Medical Center.
  • Participate in in-services and performance improvement activities and customer service programs at unit and service line levels.
  • Be responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care based on age-specific components.
  • Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary team to influence care outcomes.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduation from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the U.S.
  • Proficiency in basic written and spoken English as per 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination and participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
