About the position

The Outpatient Mental Health Registered Nurse (RN) position is located within the 32nd Street Clinic, Nursing Service at the Phoenix VA Healthcare System in Phoenix, AZ. This role is essential in providing comprehensive nursing care to Veterans in various outpatient settings within the Mental Health and Nursing Service departments. The RN is responsible for assessing, monitoring, supporting, educating, and coordinating care for Mental Health Veterans in collaboration with other mental health and primary care providers. The RN will engage in both scheduled and unscheduled appointments, providing care through telephone and telehealth services as well as in-person visits. This position requires the RN to complete Clinical Reminders and Suicide Assessments as appropriate, ensuring that all care is delivered in accordance with the nursing process, which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses. The RN's primary commitment is to the unit and the patients, whether they are individuals, families, groups, or communities. The RN may work in various clinics, including the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP), Injection Clinic, Walk-in/Triage Clinic, or rTMS clinic, depending on coverage needs. This position is full-time and offers a competitive salary range of $87,330 to $161,750 per year, with opportunities for regular salary increases and performance awards. The work schedule is typically from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with the possibility of an alternate work schedule. This is a permanent position with no telework options available.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and monitor the mental health needs of Veterans in outpatient settings.
  • Provide education and support to Veterans and their families regarding mental health issues.
  • Coordinate care with other mental health and primary care providers.
  • Conduct telephone and telehealth appointments as well as in-person visits.
  • Complete Clinical Reminders and Suicide Assessments as necessary.
  • Deliver care and supportive counseling to promote health and prevent illness.
  • Function in various clinics as needed, including BHIP, Injection Clinic, Walk-in/Triage Clinic, or rTMS clinic.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required; non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are not available.
  • Must possess a full and unrestricted license as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Graduates of accredited nursing programs are required, with specific accreditation standards outlined.
  • Proficiency in basic written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all VA Health Care Personnel.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in Mental Health nursing is preferred.
